MISSION STATEMENT
TO SEEK & GATHER ALL PEOPLE IN JESUS’ NAME
FEED THEM WITH THE SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL THINGS THEY NEED,
EQUIP THEM TO BE NEW DISCIPLES, SEND THEM OUT TO DO JESUS’ WORK.
History
St. James started at its earliest as a Sunday School in 1912. In April 1913, Rev. Joseph Peters was sent to organize a congregation and became its first Pastor.
June 4th of that same year, a congregation organized itself and rented a lot at the northwest corner of 15th and Union Streets. The lot served as the church’s temporary site.
In 1914, St. James held a groundbreaking service for its present site at 15th and Walnut Streets. In 1955, church leadership broke ground for the new Christian Education Building and dedicated it on March 18, 1956.
In 1957, by ecumenical union of the Congregational Christian and the Evangelical & Reformed Churches, the congregation changed the church’s name to St. James United Church of Christ.
Through many changes in the world, and in the neighborhood, St. James UCC still stands proud and tall. Its congregation continues to be faithful to God's call to ministry, to worship and witness the good news of the Gospel.
